What Happens Without Treatment

Given what is now know about mental illness, there is no excuse for failing to treat schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and other severe forms of mental illness.  Severe mental illness does not discriminate by race, sex, religion, or income.  There is no shame in getting sick, but there is real danger in not seeking or getting treatment.

Beyond the basic medical risk of a condition growing worse without treatment, failing to treat a mental illness is too often accompanied by a growing list of preventable tragedies.  Family breakups, suicide, homelessness, becoming a victim of violence, sexual abuse, or committing a violent act are among the hazards.

Too often, a person with a severe mental illness is not treated until an encounter with law enforcement or the criminal justice system.  As a result of misguided policies, the Los Angeles County Jail now tops of the list of psychiatric hospitals in the U.S.

On this website is a database of preventable tragedies that happen in every part of the country.  Our vision is to eliminate the need to maintain such a database.
